Those who have commented on my previous post have expressed varying degrees of distaste for the San Mateo Bridge.

Know, those of you who haven't driven it, that the San Mateo is by far the longest of the bridges across San Francisco Bay and consequently the one which affords the opportunity to leave the commuter stuck in traffic the longest. For most of its length it is a featureless causeway close to the waterline (which makes some people nervous). Near the end (if you're travelling westbound from Hayward) it rises high in the air to allow ships to pass beneath, and then turns and comes in for a landing between the shopping centers of Foster City.

Though I drive it infrequently, because it's rarely the best route between two places I need to go, I kind of like the Sammy, because I once had a religious vision on it.

It was a lowering day, much like today, with low clouds spread over the sky. As I headed west on the causeway, the bridge's rise before me disappeared up into the fog, leaving it without a visible top. Suddenly a break in the clouds illuminated the visible shaft of the rise. And the cars were going up and down upon it. And I thought of Genesis 28:12, Jacob's Ladder. "He dreamed, and lo: a ladder was set on the ground, with its top reaching to heaven, and lo: angels of God going up and coming down on it."

The numinous in the mundane: a rare thrill.
