more on the day
May. 23rd, 2011 11:03 amI attribute my ability to remember that May 23rd is "don't buy the liverwurst" day to an incident that happened to me in college.
I was riding my bicycle one afternoon to my part-time job* when I tried to figure out, without a calendar in hand (since I was occupied riding the bike) what the date was. After some cogitation - it gets harder towards the end of the month - I concluded that it was May 23rd.
May 23rd. Hmm. Something about that date sounded familiar. I tossed it around in my head for a while. Then I remembered.
Never forgotten it since.
*My job was at what I fondly like to believe was the smallest professional publishing company in the United States. Four people, all very part-time, occupying a post office box and an office in the owner's back bedroom. During the three years I worked there we published exactly one new book (and reprinted two of our tiny back catalog). One of my tasks was to assign the new book its ISBN, as a result of which I was listed as the firm's official ISBN contact in Books in Print, my first appearance in any sort of professional directory.
