calimac"Where are you going?" called out small grand-nephew H. as I skipped out early on the wedding reception. "To work!" I called back, and hurried off to my car.
Usually it's B. who has to leave for work early in the evening, but tonight it was me. I'd tried to turn down the request to review a concert on the same day as the big family wedding, but come the weekly assignment e-mail and there I am on it. Rather than kick up a fuss, I decided it would be better to make it happen. Besides, if I do the work, I get paid, always a good thing. So B. and I drove over in separate cars, and I left her in what her siblings incorrectly believed was the lurch.
"Oh, so you're reviewing a concert? What are they playing?" "Arthur Honegger, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Peteris Vasks." "Who?"
Over the hill to Santa Cruz, 40 minutes for a concert that lasts less than 90 including intermission. Then same drive time back again. Phew.
So the music got played, and meanwhile D. and R. are well and truly married. We have a new niece, and R. has at a stroke acquired about 15 or 20 aunts and uncles: even I'm not sure exactly how many.
