convention schedules
Aug. 1st, 2006 09:15 amOthers have been listing their Worldcon programming schedules, but I have two conventions to speak at, the other being Mythcon at the end of this week.
At Mythcon I'm giving two short papers, both inspired by the convention theme, maps & geography in fantasy. And both are topics I've been studying for decades, so I'm going to ad lib both of them, because writing it down takes so curiously long. One's on "The Structural Geography of Middle-earth" (actually a reprise of a presentation I gave at Mythcon in 1979, but I don't expect anyone to remember that), and the other is on "The Valley of the Na", as in Le Guin's Always Coming Home, a geographical locale I've gone over with Le Guin's maps and a figurative magnifying glass, though I haven't actually been there in several years. Missed two opportunities to go up this spring because time simply ran out.
I'm also on two panels. I'm moderating one on "Tolkien and War," a topic of some interest lately with two good books out on it, one of them by the chair of the convention. Unfortunately one of the other panelists is a locally-noted tedious overlong talker, so I have my moderating work cut out for me.
The other panel is "Recent Children's Fantasy Films," and B. and I just watched Nanny McPhee and re-watched Ella Enchanted to prepare for that. This got me salivating to re-watch Shrek, which I did the next day for about the thirtieth time. It blows away all the competition, including its own sequel.
Here's my list for Worldcon:
Thu 8/24 10:00 AM, 60-90 minutes.
Title: THE SHORT FICTION OF J.R.R. TOLKIEN
Participants: David Bratman(M), Diana Glyer, Lisa Goldstein, Lorien Gray
Precis: We all know The Lord of the Rings but what about his short fiction?
Panel 2: Thu 8/24 2:30 PM, 60-90 minutes.
Title: MEASURE OF SUCCESS: AWARDS FROM A TO Z
Participants: David Bratman, Moshe Feder(M), Jerry Kaufman
Precis: The historical perspective. Overview of some of the awards, current and defunct. What do they all mean?
Panel 3: Fri 8/25 5:30 PM, 60-90 minutes.
Title: A BEER CAN TOWER TO THE MOON AND OTHER FABULOUS FAN PROJECTS
Participants: David Bratman(M), Len J. Moffatt, John Trimble
Precis: There have been all sorts of projects over the years, and some of them even worked. There have been bibliographic projects, fan funds, building funds, and conventions even attracted hundreds of people. Also our never ending effort to get organized. Hear about the ones that worked and the ones that plunged all of Fandom into war.
