I'm thankful

for the apple pie that my four-year-old (!) great-niece made, with minimal help from her grandmother, for dessert at the family Thanksgiving gathering. It was very good, and the apples - which Grandma assured us that Alix peeled and cored all by herself - were particularly delicious.

As apple is about the only kind of pie I like, I'm particularly thankful that nobody heeded this ridiculous screed arguing that we shouldn't have apple pie at Thanksgiving because you can get apples at any time of the year. We should only eat foods that are only in season around November.

Like turkeys.

You may be please to know that your preference has been ranked highly by argumentative statistics-obsessed sports fan writers.

However, I can tell they haven't had a good strawberry pie. I was at a sugar shack on Île d'Orléans. There was a huge field of strawberries across the road. So I ordered the strawberry pie. My slice had a layer an inch and a half thick of sliced fresh strawberries, firmly packed. It was a thing of wonder.

I would probably have liked that strawberry pie. I like strawberries, but not as much as apples, and I generally avoid strawberry (and other) pies because a sub-optimal one would repel me in a way that a sub-optimal apple pie would not. Since I'm not much of a pie-eater even at the best of times, I'm not risking losing much.

The article does acknowledge that the best apple season is the fall, but says it's over before November. (Indeed, the local apple famous for the brevity of its season, the Gravenstein, lives in August.) But we do get good apples here at other times of year, which isn't true for other fruits.
