Dec. 4th, 2014 04:31 pm1. It's been raining a great deal here over the last few days, something not seen much of these three years. And, sure enough, the usual crop is sprouting up in its wake. I refer not to wildflowers, or to the green grass which briefly decorates our brown hills. No, what invariably follows a heavy rainstorm here is a crop of newspaper articles cautioning that, however much rain fell, it still won't be enough to alleviate the drought.
2. The San Jose city council has banned bike riding on the sidewalks in the center area of downtown. I've seen lots of bicyclists on the sidewalks there in the past, and it always shocked me, not just because there are dedicated bike lanes on most of the streets now, but because I was taught, as a budding bicyclist, never to ride on the sidewalk, at least not when there were pedestrians around. As it is, the seniors resident in the area have felt terrified by the bicyclists. When a bicyclist at the council meeting accused the pedestrians of reckless walking ...
3. California is now issuing drivers' licenses for undocumented immigrants. Let us specify that this is a good thing. Nevertheless, I fear that this will mean that authorities in places like Arizona will stop considering our drivers' licenses valid ID, even though the ones in question will be distinctly marked. But I'm not risking chances, and will take my passport with me when I go to Arizona. I'm trying not to remember the childhood lesson that one major reason the Soviet Union was a bad place was the requirement on citizens of having their papers in order.
