a few thoughts on the Hugo awards

I wonder if the people with a theory about women winning TAFF will apply the same theory to the win by the one female author nominated for Best Novel. Possibly a Really Big Book theory would be more appropriate.

I observe that, when two stories by one author were nominated for the same award, closer to half than all of the voters for one story put the other one next.

Moving Ansible has not prevented Langford from getting two Hugos again. It trounced Locus in the Best Locus category and even nosed out the usual British Worldcon winner, Interzone. However, Locus Online came within one vote of winning the Best Website Category; this is not the first time Locus has lost something by one vote.

Poor Chunga: the most fannish fanzine came in below No Award. At least all the nominees were, like, real fanzines.

As has happened before, the most enjoyable film (The Incredibles) won DP-Long and the actual best film (Eternal Sunshine) got a respectable second. I would have been dismayed as hell at the DP-short win of an episode of Battlestar Galactica except that I understand the new tv show is actually good and nothing like its wince-worthy predecessor. (I believe it's on cable, which would make it unavailable to me.) Seems to me we went through something like that once before too, with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Yes, on the first ballot, Chunga fell to the very bottom. In the final standings, however, it tied for fourth place with Challenger. Which is still below where I placed it on my ballot, but not as bad as finishing behind No Award.
