Certainly it's the logical guess, but as it happens the publication of AD&D was the point at which I stopped playing D&D. I think I was I little out of gaming for a year or so, and then I was tempted back in by RuneQuest II, which was a "roll low" game. In fact the majority of games I've played or run have been "roll low," to the point where I see a small number and reflexively think "great roll!" So it's not that I don't understand the joke so much as that I had to think about it for a moment to get it, which has a humor-dampening effect probably a bit like this whole paragraph's. . . .
