The only professional-category Hugo nominees I'm familiar with are the movies of The Hobbit and The Hunger Games, both of which I thought rather lame. I haven't even seen The Cambridge Companion to Fantasy Literature. I feel deeply ashamed, or out of it, which may be the same thing.

I'm marginally ahead of you. I've read Captain Vorpatril's Alliance (entertaining and much more fun than the past couple in that universe, but I'm not sure I'd call it Hugo material) and Saga (which I'm enjoying enough to keep reading), and I've seen three films of the five. The Avengers was really good, to my taste; The Hunger Games was interesting and more enjoyable than the book, largely because the Roman imagery was so strong; The Hobbit not only was unsatisfying in itself but retroactively made The Lord of the Rings less enjoyable—the films, of course; nothing could spoil the book!

It occurs to me that I've actually edited a couple of Cambridge Companions. I'm sorry they didn't send me that one.

If I hadn't decided to use my free Redbox rental to see The Hunger Games I'd be even further out of the loop than you.
