Complete nominee list.

I've seen four of the nominated films so far, all of them, as it happens, within the last month and a half, and it happens that I've reviewed them all here.

Midnight in Paris. This one I actually enjoyed.

The Help. Earnestly wants to be a virtuous movie, but forgot to be a particularly good movie in the process.

My Week with Marilyn. Well, that one was kind of a mistake.

The Iron Lady. This one I knew would be a mistake before I saw it.

I've seen only two, The Artist and Hugo. Hugo was pretty good, with interesting visualization; it had a strange feel, almost like watching anime done with live actors. The Artist was a total delight! If you've ever seen Fritz Lang's classic M, where the sound track plays a continuing central role in the story, as if Lang was showing off what a sound film could do, this is almost the inverse: Its central trope is silence. The lead actor and actress actually have great chemistry, and the lead actress in particular is marvelously expressive.

Of the ten pictures nominated for Best Picture, I've seen a grand total of one of them (unlike last year, when I saw six). Still, Hugo was the best film I've seen in a very long time, and if another wins I shall be sad.

Really, the Oscars stopped being meaningful roughly the time when VCRs meant anyone could go find previous Academy Award movies... and see just what a rotten choice it was.

I have seen none of the nominees, but I have read several of the books on which they were based.

I've seen two of the Best Picture nominees and think it would be great if either one of them won: Hugo and The Tree of Life. Of the others, I am most keen to see The Artist, and have some mild interest in seeing War Horse. My biggest disappointment is that Take Shelter is to be found nowhere among any of the nominees; it should have received nominations for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Actress. If it had received any of those nominations, I would have preferred it over any other contenders in any of those categories.
