Alaska = Insomnia
Arizona = Raising Arizona
California = for a real Bay Area flavor, how about Vertigo? (and why aren't there more movies that old on this list?); for the southland, the truest L.A. movie of many is L.A. Story, and for both halves of California, north and south, in one movie = The Graduate
Colorado = Silver City (John Sayles, yes!)
Connecticut = Amistad (a stretch geographically, I know)
Florida = Sunshine State (in fact, give Sayles enough time, and he may cover the whole map by himself)
Idaho = Napoleon Dynamite (one of the most pointless movies I ever did see, but no question, it's about Idaho, all right)
Illinois = Chicago
Indiana = Breaking Away
Iowa = Field of Dreams (another nimnul film with good local color,
Kansas = The Wizard of Oz (a sorry excuse for a film about Kansas, but the inevitable choice)
Louisiana = The Princess and the Frog
Maine = Carousel (see, old movies)
Massachusetts = Good Will Hunting
Michigan = Roger and Me
Minnesota = Fargo (never mind the title, it's Minnesota)
Montana = A River Runs Through It
Nevada = Bad Day at Black Rock (more old movies ... see, oooolllldd movies)
New Hampshire = The Return of the Secaucus Seven (continuing an occasional theme of movies that don't take place where the titles allude to)
New Jersey = Clerks
New Mexico = Fat Man and Little Boy
New York = Across the Universe for the city, Frozen River for the state
North Carolina = Bull Durham
Oregon = Kindergarten Cop (one more dumb movie with good local color)
Pennsylvania = Witness (for the east) and Groundhog Day (for the west)
South Carolina = The Big Chill
South Dakota = Dances with Wolves
Texas = Lone Star (see? Sayles!)
Washington = Snow Falling on Cedars (make it a little more quirky, and it could have been John Sayles's Washington state film. Do not, repeat not name "Sleepless in Seattle": fake, fake, fake)
West Virginia = October Sky
Wyoming = Brokeback Mountain
