Traffic jams.

I just checked the schedule, and two of the games here coincide with days I'm going up to the City.

Why does God do this to me.

Truthfully, for those of you who cheer the Giants, I'm pleased that you're happy. Really. Have a great time; knock yourselves out. And it's not as if dealing with the traffic will be more than one of the ordinary nuisances of life. But it's worth pointing out that there's another picture of the meaning and impact of these events than the received view.

I keep hearing the punchline to the old joke: "Because you piss me off!"

I can't imagine the whole city being affectred. The ballpark is down at the end of Market Street. And the number of people who can fit in the park is less than the typical 49ers home game.

This seems a bit of an overreaction.

It's not the people in the park. It's the people going to the park. And they will be going my way, oh yes. Train? BART? You can get to the park that way, and you will.

Two points, which you may already be aware of:

1. Unless the Series goes six or seven games (impossible to predict), only the first two games (this Wednesday and Thursday) will be in San Francisco.

2. This is only the second time in the last twenty years that the Giants have been in the World Series (versus, for example, seven for the Yankees). So it could be worse.

The "impossible to predict" part makes it worse. The Super Bowl only lasts one day, and the location is chosen long before the teams are. The World Series location is a complete mystery until the previous week, and you don't know how long it will last until it does. Makes planning around it all the more frustrating. Fun if you're following the game, but a nuisance if you aren't - and even more confusing. With all the fuss over the playoffs last week, I thought for a while that they were the World Series.

You have my sympathy. During Bouchercon, which was at the Hyatt Embarcadero, we got caught in the going-home traffic after one of the playoff games. As busy as we were at the convention, it had not been on our radar. Not sure how we would have avoided it anyway, given our schedule.

We had been taking the BART from our cheap(er) hotel every day, but that morning had driven because we had way too much stuff to bring with us. I imagine the BART would have been extra-crowded, but at least it wouldn't have been slowed down. Although the first morning we went in, our train was crammed with the regular commuters plus 200 high school kids on some kind of field trip. Not the most pleasant trip.
