Someone on the MythSoc mailing list is looking to find a new home for a Narnia choose-your-own-adventure book.

A Narnia choose-your-own-adventure? I can see it now:

You have passed through the wardrobe and arrived at the lamp-post when a faun approaches you, says "Goodness gracious me!" and drops all his packages. Do you:

1) Say "Good evening" and politely introduce yourself?
2) Grab as many packages as you can and run?
3) Offer him some Turkish delight?

Wiping all reader knowledge out of my mind as much as possible, I'd do the polite things by greeting the faun and helping him pick up his packages.

One can walk into all sorts of adventures by doing the polite thing, as I have learned from role-playing gaming.

Curiously, in the book Lucy does not help Mr. Tumnus pick up his packages. He gathers them all himself.

I wonder where they came from. I've never thought about that before. There are no shops that we ever see, but packages strongly implies them. Was the White Witch running a kind of PX?

Lewis's friend Ruth Pitter, the poet, once grilled Lewis about where the Beavers got all the food for the lunch they served the children. "They caught the fish through holes in the ice," said Lewis. "Quite so," said Pitter, "but the dripping to fry them? The potatoes - a plant that perishes at a touch of the frost - the oranges and sugar and suet and flour and hops for beer and milk for the children?" (Lewis had already ruled out foreign trade.)

Lewis was reduced to saying, "I must refer you to a further study of the text," to which his brother Warren, who was listening in, said, "Nonsense, Jack; you're stumped and you know it."
