quasigrecian thoughts
Jul. 31st, 2010 09:50 pm1. To successive Menlo "young performers" concerts on near-successive days. These kids, mostly 10-18, are true professionals already: all they really lack is seasoning, a quality more evident the better the listener knows the piece. They have more trouble with their canned introductory talks than with the music. "Brahms was influenced by Baroque composers." Pause. "Like Bach." Kind of amazing to hear three ten-year-old girls tackle a Haydn piano trio in hard-stomping style, as if they were the musicians at an English country dance.
2. To the party hosted by
magscanner and
vgqn. Talked with people I hadn't seen in at least ten years. Met a woman who claims to be able to tell by looking at people on TV not only whether they have, but whether they will, commit adultery. Skepticism here. Ate smoked turkey and corn on the cob.
3. Pandora to the vet. She's pretty much just skin and bones now, and the question is, how long can she hold on? But she's still alert and active, living the good life of an indoor cat, so at this point it's just regular shots of the (we hope) ameliorative medicine, and trying to find some food that she'll eat, and hope for the best as long as possible.
