They're here.

I think this is the first year that the Hugo nominated fiction has included two separate stories, by different authors, with the same title.

This may also be the first time a convicted felon has a Hugo-nominated story. I expect he deserves the Hugo nomination. He certainly didn't deserve the conviction.

I haven't read any of this, though B. has read two of the novels. (She's also read some of the Campbell nominees.) I haven't read any of the non-fiction nominees, either; in fact, I've only seen one (the Clute collection, which I meant to buy at Potlatch, but forgot) and previously heard of two others. But I'd like to read all six.

I've seen one each in the two dramatic presentation categories. I'm not completely satisfied with either. I do wonder if maybe the "tv series should be nominated by episode" rule, which long predates the short form/long form division, has outlived its usefulness. It was installed in the 60s, after The Twilight Zone, an anthology series, won three years in a row. The changed rule proved its worth in 1968, when the final ballot consisted of five episodes of Trek Classic, in the days when that was the only worthwhile SF show on television. But it proved its problems the following year, when The Prisoner, which, despite the ability of most of its episodes to stand alone, is best viewed as a mini-series, was forced to be represented by its final episode: the climactic but not the best part.

This year we have three episodes of Doctor Who (a common occurrence nowadays), one from FlashForward (and from the title I have no idea if it's one I've seen or not), and the infamous Lost Episode of Dollhouse. And there's the dilemma, because it really doesn't make any sense to view the first season of Dollhouse as anything other than a unit. I might be willing to vote for that unit, but not for this episode by itself, no.

My heartiest congratulations go to the two individuals who have two nominations each in the fan categories. Well done.
