Two hundred years ago today

Lewis and Clark and their men set up camp for three days at the mouth of the Kansas River, thus becoming temporarily the only (there are no Indians around at the moment) human inhabitants of the future site of Kansas City. The permanent inhabitants include a large number of a now-extinct species of parakeet. (Yes, parakeet.)
