how a review gets made

liveavatar alerted me to a preliminary concert by a new orchestra in her corner of the world. I wasn't able to go, but I tagged the group, and after its first regular season appeared on the web, I chose the first concert as one of my picks for the fall previews at SFCV.
Which in turn caused my editor to decide we should give them a bit more of the warm balm of publicity and send me to review the concert.
I might have thought differently if I'd been to the hall before.
The minute I walked in to the church and heard a couple of players rehearsing, I knew the acoustics would be bad. But not quite how bad. I sat close to the back, not that it made much difference. I should have stood in the foyer, under the overhang. Or outside with the doors open. Something. Anything.
