Hugo awards

A lot of people on my LJ feed want me to know that the Hugos have just been given out, away over there in Melbourne. But though they may mention an individual winner or two, none of them posted the list, nor is it yet up in obvious places like the Worldcon's own site. It required only a little searching to find it here.

Thoughts:

Best Fanzine went to the only nominee I've never heard of. I'm so out of things.

I don't think Fred Pohl was the best fan writer of 2009, really, but as a career award, it's richly satisfying to see.

At least that dreadful lost episode of Dollhouse didn't win DP Short.

Ah, so the quiet little low-key movie telling the story of one human being's interaction with technology beat out all of the big fat sfx blockbuster adventures. Something we can easily point to to show the masses what science fiction really is.

This is, I think, only the third time in Hugo history that there's been a tie for Best Novel. I counted the votes the second time it happened, and remember my awed feeling while counting the ballots, as the vote totals slowly converged. Just before the show I alerted the person running the ceremony that something unusual was going to happen. "There is a tie this year." "What category?" "Novel," I said with emphasis, and her eyes went wide.
