If anyone's around in the South Bay Area who cares, it appears that the ailing local PW supermarket chain is now pulling the plug. (Like every ailing corporation whose demise I've witnessed, from the San Jose Symphony to Spansion, they kept denying the end was near until it suddenly arrived.) I stopped into my local outlet this afternoon, to discover big signs for a closing sale; everything inside was from 10%-30% off, sorted by department. (Meat and produce were only 10%; much of the canned and packaged dry foods were 30%.) From what the clerks said, I gather it's the whole chain and not just this branch.
Pity; it was never a great supermarket, but it did have a few good things nobody else carried, and the staff were fairly alert and helpful. Now it's time for the vulture scavenger hunt: I expect prices will drop further over the next few days.
