Currently on my front burner is the local guide to Potlatch. We're holding it down in my neck of the woods at the end of next month, and I seem to have taken this on. So this is my chance to say what I think one is for.

The first function of a local guide is to recommend restaurants. A fan needs to eat. As people like to try the choicest local cuisine when they're on a trip, and often have limited time or limited local transport when they're attending a con, restaurants can be recommended on two bases: the best food that's near, and the nearest food that's best, for varying definitions of "near" and "best".

Accordingly, the restaurant guide will have two sections. One will list everything within a close distance - about 3/4 mile - from the fast-food joints on up, and will list them in geographic order. For if your primary concern is to look for food that's very close - you could be on foot - then the closeness becomes the first sorting factor.

Separately, the ones within driving distance: about a 6-8 mile radius. These are selective. And because I've received only a few suggestions from other people, most of those selections are going to be mine. But I'm going to try to be broad-minded, thinking about places I've had a good meal of varying cuisines, especially ones that aren't to be found closer to the hotel.

I'm actually a bit limited as a restaurant maven. We don't eat dinner out a lot: it's more comfortable, and cheaper, to eat at home. (So when I see reports of families tightening belts by eliminating dinner out, I think: we already did that.) But after decades in this area, there's enough places I know to recommend, and these days there are plenty of other sources, online and in print, for other views.

What I do have out a lot, especially when I'm working, is lunch. (Occasional sandwiches are OK, but a steady lunch diet of brown bags would dismay me.) And my preference for a weekday lunch is Chinese. There's hardly a Chinese restaurant within ten miles I don't have an opinion of its lunch menu, but for that reason it's easy to resist listing them all.

What else? Shopping. B. toted up some fabric and clothing and accessory and such miscellanea in the nearest downtown. Me, I do bookstores. Unless someone else comes up with something, that's going to be about it. The supermarket two blocks away has a pharmacy; we'll want to list that. And the hardware emporium next door to it.

And some tourist attractions. Even the trackless suburbs have a few things sufficiently weird or intriguing to attract people's attention.

Yarn Stores?
And any Tea Shops near by.
The Indian Restaurant in the shopping center next to Lawrence is Recommended. We've eaten there a number of time and enjoy it. Yes, even me!
And don't forget the Big Lots in the same shopping center (good for cheap stuff which was forgotten).
Sorry, I've not spent much time in that neck of the woods, but can help with the research of Yarn Stores if needed. :D

Bombay Garden. Yes, it's on the list.

We have Purlescence in downtown Sunnyvale, favorite hangout of [livejournal.com profile] wild_patience and [livejournal.com profile] cynthia1960. So far as B. knows, that's the only good yarn shop in the area north of the one near SCU.

Tea: well, there's Peet's which has tea.

Will add Big Lots; thanks.

I don't think most people know how much research you and [livejournal.com profile] vgqn have been putting into this. Not that it is a hardship task. The restaurant variety around the hotel really is splendid. The couple of times i participated were very tasty.

The Fry's mothership is a short drive away on Lawrence. People might want to know about that, and also about Weird Stuff Warehouse.

Fry's and Weird Stuff: good idea. Do you want to do writeups? I'm trying to keep most of them between 25 and 75 words.

Is Weird Stuff still there? I thought it closed years ago. Certainly Fry's has moved and is no longer on Lawrence. It's on Arques, between Lawrence and Wolfe.

Weird Stuff is still around but has moved over near the Yahoo Campus, down by the landfill on Bernardo? Good birding near the sewer ponds.
