Other ethnic festivals in San Jose are held in lush, pleasant city parks. The Greek festival is held on the asphalt back parking lot of a Greek Orthodox church in the Rosegarden district. The jewelry mostly uses the Cretan labyrinth as a design model. But the food is good.

I was not the only man wearing a putatively Greek fishing cap, but unlike the time I wore it to a Portuguese festival, no one took me as of the celebrating nationality or tried to speak to me in its language.

Then to a Stanford students' chamber music concert, one movement per each of about a dozen student groups. As usual the best were last, and we got nice renditions of movements from Shostakovich's Third Quartet, Brahms's Op. 111 string quintet, Mendelssohn's Op. 80 quartet, and Schubert's Op. 100 piano trio, and the concluding finale from Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" Quartet would have been equally good if only the first violinist hadn't kept losing tone on the high aching cries which are the movement's most exquisite feature.
