A friend of mine was an artist in residence in the Marin Headlands this past summer. She took a walk to the beach in the evening without a flashlight, got caught in darkness on her way back, and spent the night less than a mile from her warm bed, completely lost in the outdoors. She came out mostly okay, though with a case of poison oak that was pretty astonishing. One night in the outdoors won't kill most healthy people (and she's a dancer/choreographer by profession, so healthier than most), but it served to remind her (and me) of just how close the danger is.
