All the pieces have been shuffled into place, so it's time to whip off the sheet and reveal the convention I'm chairing next year:

MYTHCON 38
Clark Kerr Center, Berkeley CA
(home of Mythcons in 1988, 1995, and 2001)
August 3-6, 2007

Guests of Honor, Ellen Kushner and Delia Sherman
Theme, Becoming Adept: The Journey to Mastery

Membership rates
$50 for Mythopoeic Society members
$60 for non-members
$40 for registered students, age 12 and up
Children under 12 free

A preliminary webpage with address and registration form and all will be prepared and, I hope I hope, will be up at www.mythsoc.org by the weekend. Meanwhile, you may admire our location.

Years ago, it occurred to me that when (rather than if) the Bay Area hosted another Mythcon, I wanted to invite Ellen and Delia to be GoHs because they're such cool and interesting people. And so it be. Yes!

Sounds great. Delia and Ellen are indeed cool people. Very interesting and possibly esoteric theme, as well. Did any particulal works inspire the choice?

The theme was sort of evolved by the group mind. I like it because it can cover a great many stories, but I have always been impressed by this particular moment:

"I am with you at present," said Gandalf, "but soon I shall not be. I am not coming to the Shire. You must settle its affairs yourselves; that is what you have been trained for. Do you not yet understand? ... And as for you, my dear friends, you will need no help. You are grown up now. Grown indeed very high; among the great you are, and I have no longer any fear at all for any of you."

Hopefully this won't affect your attendance as the audience probably doesn't overlap but in case you didn't know already, these dates are for the same weekend as the NASFiC in St Louis. (Being philosophically opposed to the NASFiC myself, I hope that anyone who is trying to choose between them would choose Mythcon.)

Thanks for the alert. In fact Nasfic wasn't listed on the Locus con page when I first checked a couple months ago, and I only found out about it when the latest LACon PR came.

So we put the date in limbo for a bit, and then discovered that our GoHs could attend Aug 3-6 but not earlier! (Mythcon tries for a 2-3 week window.)

As we really wanted them, that kind of settled that. As you say, Nasfic isn't that big a draw (Archon? Really?), and there isn't a strong overlap between Mythcon and the Worldcon-type SF fandom anyway. And every weekend is something.

Congratulations! I'm not sure if this will conflict with the Japanese Worldcon.

There will be flyers at Baycon! I just got through designing them. Basic, with all the information. Hopefully no typos.

I will be at the CostumeCon 26 table with CC26 stuff and MythSoc Stuff (I am treasurer to both groups) and SiliconWeb stuff (just a member there, but it's costuming related).

See everyone at Baycon.

And Next Year at Mythcon!

Japanese WorldCon is later.

See note above about conflicting with the NASFiC.

Japanese Worldcon Labor Day weekend (ancient Japanese holiday). Did want to stay out of the way of that one.
