Do you know the story about the woman who bet that she could get Coolidge to say more than two words?

"You lose."

Do you know the story about Calvin, Grace, and the chickens?

I hadn't known that one, but it's pretty funny. Classic dry New England humor, one of my favorite styles. They're both funnier than the remarks about Hoover—though I'm totally not a fan of Hoover and I'm gratified to think that Coolidge wasn't either.

Hoover was a little full of himself - but then, he'd been pumped full of it by other people. No less a figure than Franklin Roosevelt said, “He is certainly a wonder, and I wish we could make him President of the United States." In 1920.

However, I give Hoover points for his reply when asked, long after his presidency, how he'd kept going despite the obloquy. He said, "I outlived the bastards." That is, the Hoover Presidential Library assures us, an authentic quote.
