The acoustics in Palo Alto were quite clear. Maybe lack of fuzziness was the problem. But Savall definitely did not apply the kind of dynamic and tempo control to Arriaga as he did to Boccherini. Perhaps he conducted differently; the Merc's reviewer attended the first performance and didn't like any of it.
But even if you'd been at Palo Alto, that doesn't mean you couldn't have liked the Arriaga symphony, especially if you hadn't heard it before. (I don't know if you had or not.) It's a very good piece of music.
