I've had a similar reaction to a lot of the debate around Puppygate: Yes, the Worldcon community is insular and in-groupish and full of fuggheads, just like all communities are, but it's not a conspiracy and it's not elitist in the sense that you can't join in if you want to. The political disagreements, as you say, are ancient, but too many of the Puppy grievances seem to derive from not understanding the Worldcon community and not understanding that the Hugos belong to that community.
