[livejournal.com profile] nineweaving says she has 598 versions of Child ballads on her ipod. That sounds like her.

I don't have an ipod, but I do have a fair number of CDs, and today I did a bit of reorganizing and reshelving of the collection. I took the opportunity to count them up. Counting my personal collection and our "merged collection" (the ones we keep on a shelf in the dining area so that B can listen to them while doing the dishes - I cook, she does the dishes - which are mostly folk and musical theatre), but excluding B's own CDs in her office - I have about 1200, of which 2/3rds are classical. About 2/3rds of the non-classical ones are folk, or what I call folk, which includes electric folk. About half of my tiny rock shelf consists of a nearly complete collection of everything the Beatles ever did. I can't break down my classical collection, or count up my number of Child ballads (which must be in the dozens) without a lot more work.

None of this includes my LPs, which I still listen to fairly regularly. I have lots of music which has either never come out on CD or which I am too impecunious, or too otherwise occupied, to replace. I haven't counted up the LPs lately, but they take up about as much wall space as the CDs do.

Yes, this is a new icon. No, it doesn't replace the old cat icon. Even us freeloaders get the option of 3 icons, and I've decided to take advantage of it. This is Joseph Haydn, whom on consideration I must name as my all-time favorite composer. (He also has the advantage of being less of a cult figure than some of my other favorites, like Shostakovich.) If all goes as planned, he should appear in future on my music posts. Icon #3 shall be introduced as the muse hits.

It's FRANKIE! (swoon)

Sorry, couldn't resist. Of course, the reaction was more often associated with Frankie Liszt, but I can stretch a tenth on good days.

I should look at my Haydn sonatas some more. They are fun stuff.

You definitely have me beat on the number of CDs. And of course on the number of them which are classical in nature (we do have *some* because Bruce's mother enjoyed classical music -- she's the one who took me to my only opera -- and between the remains of her collection and Bruce's occasional flings in that direction, we have maybe 20 or 30 classical CDs). I have a lot of folk CDs, however.

We have lots of LPs, many of them 78s, and a lot of cassettes.
