Even the web has many more "complex, lengthy texts" than could practically be found on paper. And it has access points for any level of reader. Even a shallow article with no reference links will have key words, phrases, and names -- to copy and paste into a search box. The reader can work her way up through better articles, or jump straight to some original researchers' pdf.
