A great conductor, long associated with the London Symphony Orchestra, has died. I have him in a lot of Berlioz, some Wagner and Tippett, a few other British composers. My most recent encounter with his work was this review.
On checking, I find I have his Sibelius Fourth on LP. I'm sure I listened to that often when the work was new to me. Maybe that's why I never found it as difficult a piece as everyone else thinks it is.
Gosh, a little eerie. Last night I just happened to watch a 1981 performance of Britten's Peter Grimes conducted by Colin Davis, who was shown during instrumental interludes practically dancing up on the podium. Very animated.
