Wondering if you're familiar with Stravinsky's Les Noces, of which Carmina is a transparent ripoff. It's more obvious, I own, if you've heard the two-piano arrangement of the Orff. IMO, JK is right to hate Carmina; whether he should discuss that in reviews is another matter. On one hand, it's futile to try to chase it out of the repertory; on the other, one could theoretically critically review the work even long after it is established. Of course, I have complained a lot about Bernard Holland's complaints along those lines.
