Pergolesi really knew what to do with high voices. He was the Richard Strauss of his time in that respect. I think of him as knowing what to do with women's voices and then have to remind myself, nearly every time, that he wasn't writing for women singers at all. His stuff sounds great sung by women, and I like it better that way than sung by boychoirs and countertenors.
