I grew up the daughter of a trained professional musician (my mother) and a reasonably knowledgable "audience member" (my father). Dad was not a musician, couldn't read music well, didn't have a particularly good singing voice, but knew and appreciated good music. I and my siblings all have musical ability, though none of us pursued it professionally. I've had seven years of private violin lessons and played in school orchestras. But I'm no music historian, having picked up such knowledge very haphazardly.
Given all that, I have to say, I really enjoy reading your reviews and thoughts on music and concerts. I admire the preparation you do for your reviews, and the depth of your knowledge of the composers. I like the way you put things in context (such as the above reference to Brahms and his peers). You have every right (in my eyes) to consider yourself a professional music reviewer, and that of the best sort.
And when you enjoy a concert, it comes through in the review.
