Even if you don't want to start buying books in electronic format, there are amazing numbers of true public domain books out there. (Personally, I have been having a great time reading YA series from the '10s/'20s, and some PG Wodehouse YA cricket books that I had never heard of before.) Try manybooks.net and gutenberg.org for that kind of material.

Correct— I was kidding. It’s what I would do with a Nook (and probably will about as soon as the next version comes out), but I wouldn’t recommend it for someone who wasn’t highly technical.

My God It's full of Books!

Fill it with books! Jennie has downloaded a lot of free books to her kindle and it is even easier with the Nook. She is reading her Classics that way.
And a lot of people are publishing "e-Books Only". So it was bound to happen sooner or later.
Don't forget a copy of the Hobbit and LotR, and eventually the rest of Tolkien. There are always silly arguments best settled by The Books. But they can get expensive, which is why you should do that one s-l-o-w-l-y. Hobbit is of course cheapest.
I've had a PDA with books for some time. A Portable book system is useful, even if they don't replace the paper ones.
