As a general rule, if I'm going to drive N hours to get somewhere and then drive home, I'm going to want to spend at least 2N there inbetween to make it seem worthwhile and not an exhausting caucus race. And thus it neatly equalled yesterday, with N=2.

The occasion was another of my excursions into B's family celebrations, the baptism of the youngest grand-nephew, in the tiny fogged-in Central Valley town where the family's favorite priest is now posted. The subject was extraordinarily well behaved and did not cry once, not even when the water was poured over his head, which the priest attributed to his trick of warming up the water beforehand.

Lots of both parents' families in attendance, including at least three, and possibly all four (I didn't get everybody on the other side identified) great-grandmothers, a fairly awesome feat.

After a cold buffet lunch in the social hall (our contribution: salads from Draeger's) I watched over subject's tiny big sister playing catch with her cousin of the same age. They had a little soft mitt with a ball of the same material, each lined with velcro. Sophia would throw the ball at Taylor who would suddenly realize it was whizzing by, and turn and run after it. Then Sophia decided to play keep-away and ran around the tables with the ball, Taylor chasing after her with the mitt.

This town is famous for its sausage, so we came home with some provisions to keep me fed when B. isn't home, since she doesn't eat red meat.
