I hate 262, too many lights and traffic. Since we live so close to where 680 turns into 280, we usually do that swing around instead, when directions have us taking 680. The Garmin loves 680/262/880, so it is the shortest, just not the easiest.
And I also say screw it, I know 580/84/680 is supposed to be shorter, but 580/680 is easier. Luckily, I rarely do Sacto, so it's rarely a problem. May get to find out in Aug 2011 coming back from Reno, I'm sure the Garmin will like it.
What is 4? A State Hwy?

I don't mind 262; it's short, and very convenient from my direction. From yours it'd require using the south end of 880, a difficult road I drive only when going to the airport or the Rosegarden district. So from your place to outer 680, yeah, I'd do what you do.

4 is a state highway that runs from up the Carquinez strait across the valley into Calaveras and Alpine counties. As it crosses Stockton it becomes a freeway link between 5 and 99 where they're close together. It's like the 380 of Stockton. Coming out of central Sacto, I happened to be pointed in a direction that it was easier to get on 50 E than W, so I took 99 because it was simpler to switch over on 4 then to wrastle around on the one-way streets to get pointed on 50 going the other way towards 5.

Your mastery of maps and routes reminds me that such mastery is an art that might well die out in another generation, given the advent of gps. If so, the world will become a lesser known place, and we less able to knowingly navigate it; not a happy prospect no matter how slick and effortless the gadgets of guidance become.

Heh, I've been on all of those roads, and most of the subsegments, although not the entire route all together. I generally skip 84 in favor of 580/680 unless I actually want to go to Livermore.

Since 84 has been re-routed around central Livermore, it's become an easier road to take.

When writing was invented, people mourned the inevitable loss of the tradition of oral literature. Now that all literature is no longer festooned with references to rosy-fingered dawn and the wine-dark sea, those of who got tired of those tropes back in high school can breath a sigh of the proverbial relief.

But no, I do not and will not use GPS. Two reasons, of which the subtler is that what I want is to know where I'm going rather than just directions to get there. There's a difference. Without knowing where you're going, the instructions seem random and meaningless, you don't know how to fix a mistake or how to choose alternatives, and you don't even know if your goal is correct. (My favorite example being the person headed for Capri who drove to the other end of Italy because he'd entered "Carpi" into his GPS as a typo.)

The other reason is that I hate computers that talk. Just hate 'em.

The only portion of that route I haven't driven is the 50 to 99 bit. I hatehatehate the 580/680 interchange, and love the new route for 84.
