I'm getting these text messages on my mobile phone urging me to vote for someone named Aisha Wahab for State Senate. It says she's been endorsed by the retiring incumbent, Bob Wieckowski. What the heck, I've never heard of either of these people. Do they have me in the wrong district, or have we been moved? Wahab, I find on looking her up, is a city councilmember in Hayward. Hayward? That's 35 miles away up in the East Bay. Are we in that district? Wahab's site says nothing about where the district is. I look up Wieckowski's incumbent website; it does show a district, which runs from Castro Valley, north of Hayward, down to Santa Clara, near us, but that's the old districts; new ones are coming into effect this year. How do I find those? Googling for new districts gets me the new districts from ten years ago, but eventually I find a nice interactive map on the website of a tv station in Riverside, of all places, at the other end of the state, but it covers all of California so that makes no difference. And it makes clear that yes, the district has been changed: Castro Valley has been deleted at one end and Sunnyvale added at the other, so we're now literally at the far end (the city limits and hence the district line runs along the street behind us) of the district with Hayward, so we're now detached from the SF Peninsula district we've been part of for all these years and put with the East Bay instead. Looks like we're getting a new assemblymember too, but our member of Congress remains the same.
