I spent most of Friday afternoon sitting in the same spot without getting up, for longer continuously than since the last time I took a transcontinental plane flight. The venue was not an airplane, however, but the restaurant/lounge in a hotel near Fisherman's Wharf. The occasion was a conversation with people whom I probably met once forty or forty-five years ago but not since.
This may not be an unusual way to spend an afternoon for some people, but it was for me, so I pause to take note of it. And the length of sitting accurately suggests a pleasant experience.
You drive to Fisherman's Wharf from here by taking Waterfront 280 to the end, which dumps you gently onto the street near the Giants ballpark. Then you curve all the way along the Embarcadero, enjoying the sunshine and the refreshing waterfront views without the hulking monstrosity of the overhead freeway whose removal was the silver lining of the Loma Prieta quake, until you get to the Wharf and start hunting for a non-extortionate parking garage.
On the way, try not to hit the bicyclist without helmet but with backwards baseball cap whose idea of crossing the street is to jump his bicycle out into the street against the light immediately in front of oncoming traffic and then, after he's in the middle of the lane, calling out "stop!"
