I was sitting and reading at B's usual spot on the sofa (B. wasn't home), and Pandora came and sat on my lap for the longest time. She doesn't usually do that; it's just B's lap she wants. But she looks like she's been ailing more, sitting around hunched up into a tiny loaf, and maybe she needed the comfort. (She's going to the vet on Friday. She won't want to go.)

What was funny was that Pippin spent much of this time on the staircase, looking down at us through the railing. Hey, there's room for two down here if you had the nerve to take it, you giant wuss.

I do not know what the bankruptcy/reorganization of Borders Books means for the future of the firm in particular or retail bookselling in general, any more than others with more wisdom or lore in these matters, but I do have some reaction to the local implications of the list of closing stores.

That list actually makes me happy, because the two near our home, which we visit most often, are not closing, but the one over the hill in Santa Cruz, which has long been threatening to suck the life out of the fine independent bookstore right up the street, is. Hah!
