a toasty warm concert
Nov. 22nd, 2010 11:17 pmFriday evening B. and I ventured out into the soggy damp far enough to dart along the corridors to Stanford's Memorial Church for a toasty warm winter concert. Gabrieli canzons for brass, always jolly. Vaughan Williams's The Lark Ascending, a tiny violin concerto you can cuddle up with. And - of course there has to be choral music - VW's Hodie, his piece occupying the same liturgical and performing niche as Part 1 of Handel's Messiah. All very seasonal - indoor music around the fire to keep the cold away - without being cloying or forced rejoicing.
This one was my initiative - it doesn't take much to get me to VW on any occasion - and I got to review it too.
