The new adaptation of Austen's Emma concluded on Sunday, so now I can comment on it. But all I have to give it is puzzled looks.

Humor, where's the humor? Hiding under a bush?

It begins with a tragic-toned flashback sequence describing the deprived childhoods of Emma, Frank, and Jane. wtf? On a plot level, Emma is motherless not to put a dark shadow over her life, but to make her mistress of Highbury at an early age.

Frank Churchill is whiny and overly talkative. Miss Bates isn't. wtf?

In other television news, a borrowed DVD of the first season of Dollhouse has entered the house, largely so that B. can watch the unaired episode. I'm not that interested. Watched the unaired pilot instead. Only served to remind me how much worse the actual show was. Eliza can get away with playing Echo's improbable doll personae in short cuts better than she could for most of an hour at once. Should have left it that way. Watched some of the featurettes to hear the cast and crew gush embarrassingly about their show. Right.
