Some of the groups that perform at le petit Trianon, I'm not quite sure what they're doing there. No doubt about this group, a piano trio consisting of a male Danish pianist and two Korean sisters for string players. They gave a charming, lively performance of Haydn's "Gypsy" Trio in G Major, and followed it up with two minor-mode works, Mendelssohn's Op. 66 and Dvorak's Op. 65, both of which were dark and dramatic, with no sign of the lightness or humor they also possess. It was all certainly powerful enough, but I think I would have enjoyed more an all-classical period concert, with a Mozart and a Beethoven to go with the Haydn. Haydn's piano trios are not his richest works, but this was an excellent performance.

The concert-series official who introduced the group pronounced their city's name -hawg'n, which is how it's usually pronounced in English these days. Some wacko anti-pedant seated immediately behind me "corrected" this to -haygen, the older English pronunciation, much further from the Danish. Honestly.

But at least I wasn't at home, tempted to watch the Oscars.
