Since so many of us will be away next week at this time (including me: I'll be in L.A. again), I might as well mention it now:

Next Monday, a week from today, Memorial Day, is the centenary of the birth of Mr. Terence Hanbury White, known to his friends as Tim, creator of The Once and Future King and many other good things.

He was born in Bombay, as it was known at the time, where his parents were part of the Raj. He came to England at the age of five. (The number of great 20C British fantasists who were colonials by birth has been noted by Tom Shippey. Orwell was also born in India, also from the civil service; Tolkien in South Africa, where his father was a banker; Peake in China, where his father was a medical missionary.)

Appropriate commemoration should be held. (But did this anniversary occur to me early enough to have suggested it as a topic for Wiscon programming? Alas, it did not.)
