Merry Christmas, and a Pippin New Year
Dec. 25th, 2004 07:53 pmas I always like to phrase it. Appropriately, this time, as most of my presents had a Tolkien connection. The extended version of the third Peter Jackson film among them, of course, but I have to wait until B. goes back to work to watch it, as she's had quite enough of these films.
Next, this Tolkien calendar, the one with Tolkien's own illustrations. Though most or all of them have appeared in books since, I think this is the first time they've been in a calendar since their first appearance back in the first official Tolkien calendars of the early 1970s. The date spaces being big and blank enough, we're going to use it as our appointment/wall calendar for the next year. Yes, that means we'll write in it. I don't believe in keeping calendars pristine.
And, as a joke, the movie tie-in Frodo ornament shown in this picture. Notice the hook on top of his head. It's fully circular. No, silly Frodo, the Ring doesn't go there.
Also for light reading, a couple of graphic novels. A Buffy story written by Jane Espenson, so I trust it'll be good; and Stupid, Stupid Rat Tails, a Bone spinoff, which I immediately read. I was surprised to notice that the main story, though drawn by Bone creator Jeff Smith, was written by somebody else, one Tom Sniegoski, for he writes better early funny Bone material than even Smith did. Bone started out as an amusing light fantasy, but quickly sank under the weight of a direly serious hack fantasy adventure plot, and I miss what it began to be. This is more like what I enjoyed in the early issues of Bone. Even though the author writes "might" for "mite" on the second page.
B. got a few gifts too, and later on we both got quite satisfactorily stuffed at the big family gathering at her brother's house. Good thing that none of the offered pies were to my taste after all I'd eaten earlier, that's all I can say.
