One of the many things I learned in classes at the ILM (Institute for Leadership in Ministry) was mirroring. When someone is upset, you mirror their level of agitation and then slowly bring it down. Telling someone to calm down is always infuriating and a huge red flag to women who are frequently told that as well as being told they're hysterical.
