I was impressed by the percussive yet still musical (varying pitches) effect he got by hitting the ends of the strings on the (guitar equivalent of a violin's) tailpiece where the strings were anchored.
I think I was most impressed by how rapidly he could pick/strum for a tremolo. That is rough on the fingertips. I noticed that when he was high on the finger board, he was picking/strumming near the tailpiece for a better sound (as violins in a similar situation bow near the bridge).
