things I've learned about SF writers

1. Jane Yolen, after years of widowhood, recently remarried. And her new husband (whom she had actually dated in college), who messes around in boats, helped her write the YA spinoff of Moby Dick she'd been dreaming of for most of her life.

2. George R.R. Martin isn't, as he thought, the grandson of an Italian immigrant. He's the grandson of an Ashkenazi Jew.

It's surprising what we mayn't know about our ancestors.

You may have noticed that my most recent re-connection to them is Portugese via the Cockburns port people.

That was a genuine surprise although I knew I had Cockburn ancestry.

That is an excellent article about CeCe Moore and genealogy. I used her DNA Detectives group at Facebook to find a search angel who had access to a registry of partially redacted birth certificates, and that's how I got my biological parents' names. And from that I could put all the rest together. She is amazing. And I have said no, the Fed and the police cannot look at my GEDmatch DNA file.
