I have heard several orchestral and chamber music performances in recent years where I think the real underlying theme was, we'd like to do something more diverse but we're working with the sheet music we already own and dang. Dang.
(And a couple others that are doing much better: the Byron Schenkman ensemble out of Seattle has been doing some good work on this front but it's definitely made for some unusual programs. Some have worked better than others but I'm enjoying the experimentation.)
