How many old newspapers, even kept under the best library preservation practice, are 'serviceable'? I remember in the old days of trekking out to the BL Newspaper Collection at Colindale, the drifts of shredding newsprint on the desk as one consulted the unwieldly bound volumes.

Newsprint, like digital media, was not intended for longterm preservation.

Will concede that using the microfilms was not ideal either.
