Oscar the grouch

I've actually seen one movie nominated for an Oscar this year. That's one more than I'd seen at the time nominations were released last year. It was Soul. I didn't like it. It had a promising beginning, but then took a left turn into a remake of Defending Your Life, which is not a recommendation in my book.

A couple others I'm interested in. The Trial of the Chicago 7, maybe. News of the World sounds interesting, even though its only nominations are in technical categories.

Not interested in Mank, because I've seen Citizen Kane and I have no desire to worship at its feet. Nor in The Father because I don't want to spend my movie-watching pleasure time dealing with dementia. Nor in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom because titling a story after somebody's butt is a complete turnoff.

I'll put a plug in for The Trial of the Chicago 7...picked it up for a movie night a few weeks ago because we were rewatching so many movies and decided for something completely new (and there wasn't much selection because not much has actually come out). I enjoy it and learned some new things from it.

I feel you on the points about the movies in general with the Oscars.

As a person who rarely sees a movie, my preference is for entertainment that will make me laugh and perhaps have a thoughtful tinge. I certainly don't want to see any more of dementia, have already lived that with 4 parental units.

Note: Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is based on an older, highly regarded play. The Black Bottom is a dance from around the 1920s.

A dance in which, as I found when I looked it up, you slap your own butt. So yes, the title is a reference to somebody's butt.
