To me, Bernstein's Mass is an allegory for what was happening in the Catholic Church in America at that time. It starts with the polyphonic Kyrie, cut off by the celebrant's simple song. A break with the past, it tries to blend the old text with new forms of music. Then everyone starts questioning, things get wild and the celebrant loses it. Then everyone calms down and comes together for a new beginning.
